ADHD at School: Parents and Teachers as Partners

Children with ADHD benefit greatly when parents and teachers work as partners to support them through school. Therefore LADS Team introduces Parents and Teachers as Partners seminar.

ADHD causes serious and ongoing challenges for children at school. They struggle to pay attention which affects their ability to learn. They also experience great difficulties with organisation and time management. Social interactions can also be problematic. To further complicate matters, most children with ADHD will have at least one co-existing condition, such as anxiety, depression, a learning difficulty or a behavioural disorder. As a result, children with ADHD face academic underachievement, school suspensions, and sometimes drop out of school. In many ways, ADHD is an invisible condition, and unless teachers are well informed, they may not be aware of their students’ struggles.

Parents play a vital role in the education of children with ADHD. In doing so, they wear several hats – organiser, tutor, mentor, counsellor, confidante, advocate, social co-ordinator, taxi-driver, financer, and friend.  They are often well informed when it comes to ADHD and how it affects their child, and they can be a great resource for teachers. However, they sometimes find it hard to establish effective lines of communication with teachers, especially during the high school years.

This seminar will provide parents with the skills and information they need to communicate effectively with schools, and partner with teachers. Our 3 speakers will speak from the perspectives of primary school, high school and parents. They will then present a panel discussion where your specific questions will be addressed.
